Some B.C. orthodontists - including one in Penticton - are offering their services free of charge to kids in need.
The B.C. Society of Orthodontists recently launched the Smiles 4 Canada program in this province to reflect concern among members about access to orthodontic treatment for children in need.
"Orthodontics is way more than just a pretty smile," Dr. Jeff Stewart, Smiles 4 Canada B.C. representative, said in a press release.
"There are many underlying health issues in your mouth that can be resolved through orthodontic treatment. Smiles 4 Canada is an opportunity for us to help children in this economically disadvantaged group improve their dental health, self-image, and self-confidence so their chances of living a better life as adults are increased."
Patients who are interested in participating in the program must apply online at www.smiles4canada.yoursmileourspecialty.ca.
Applicants who are accepted will be paired with a volunteer orthodontist as close to home as possible.
Dr. Glen Perrin with Perrin Orthodontics is the Penticton specialist participating in the program.
