About Dr. Duncan Higgins
So let's get the obvious out of the way. Dr. Duncan Higgins is kind of a self-professed geek. He's never tried to hide it. He loves science and technology and how it is always changing. He says,
"You never know what the latest tech craze, or advancement in science will be but staying on top of technologies that enhance my patients' experience and results is not negotiable. For me - it's also fun! Technological advancements aren't just for phones and video games!"
His passion for the science of orthodontics though doesn't get in the way of Dr. Higgins' goal to provide his patients the very best experience in his practice. In fact, he focuses on treating patients the same way he would treat his own family. At Delta Orthodontic Group there are always lots of smiles and the warmth of personalized care from Dr. Higgins and his team.
Dr. Higgins received his dental degree from the University of Alberta in 1977. He completed his orthodontic residency at Indiana University in 1981 where he earned his masters degree and won the outstanding orthodontic graduate award. Dr. Higgins opened his orthodontic office in Delta in 1984.
Dr. Higgins is a leading innovator in the field of orthodontics. He developed an indirect bonding technique which was published in Seminars in Orthodontics. He is the inventor and patent holder of the Xbow® (Crossbow®) Class II Corrector. The Xbow has resulted in faster treatment, treatment without headgear and minimized the need for extraction of permanent teeth. Ongoing studies at the University of Alberta on the Xbow have resulted in five articles in peer reviewed journals such as the American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics and the Angle Orthodontist. The Xbow is used by orthodontic residents at the University of Alberta, University of Toronto, University of Western Ontario and University of British Columbia.
Dr. Higgins has lectured throughout Canada and the US, including the University of Alberta and the University of Toronto, on indirect bonding, Xbow, and the CAAPP system of brackets, which uses the best of both traditional brackets and the latest passive self-ligating brackets. He is a regular lecturer to the orthodontic residents at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Higgins is a Fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada.
In his spare time, Dr. Higgins loves being with his family and enjoys rockin' out as one of the lead singers with the UBC Dental Faculty Rock Band.
